GENTLE DREAMS

The paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant. Everyday we are confronted unforgivingly as to how to make sense of this problem and the very real consequences of these decisions. We simply wish to live gentle lives making an honest living. But when faced with a glaring reality daily of constant struggle and violence, the question then arises; what room is left in a world that seems so eager towards violence and intolerance for those with but only gentle dreams?

This album grapples with this question. With Thailand suffering its current nearly decade long military dictatorship backed by the royal family and its Lèse-majesté laws endorsing state sponsored assassination and ultra nationalism, to the past history of the 1970’s Argentina political genocide, from each of our locations around the world we continue wrestling with how the consequences of this moral conflict affect each of us simply trying to survive through it all each day.

Countless people in the past have approached this problem with different perspectives and consequences to draw their own conclusions. Namba Daisuke was one such person, who decided that affirmative action was needed to address the horrors witnessed in Japan during the 1920’s-1930’s with the emperor supporting the massacre of Koreans and leftist sympathizers across the country by government military officials, which would eventually pave the way into WWII. Alone, and on his own free will, Namba attempted but failed to assassinate the emperor with a small pistol. As stated in the book ‘Hirohito And The Making Of Modern Japan’ by Herbert P. Bix:

- “Namba was charged under the criminal code and speedily tried by the Great Court of Cassation. The chief judge in the case, Yokota Hideo, reportedly urged Namba to repent in the hope that his statement could later be used to bolster popular respect for the imperial house. Replying tartly, Namba asked whether the chief judge really believed in the emperor’s divinity or merely professed such belief out of fear. When Yokota refused to answer, the would-be assassin reportedly declared, “I’ve proved the joy of living for the truth. Go ahead and hang me.” -

As to what the ‘correct’ answer is to the paradox, there is not a finite conclusion. Each of us has struggled as to how to deal with the growing realities that continue to circle each of our points on the globe with each passing year. That feeling, the feeling of having to face the very real consequences of the paradox is best summed up by the poetry of Ana María Ponce during her imprisonment in the military death camps of Argentina:

“Que no me mientan, detrás de mi,
espera el fin.
Que no me mientan,
detrás de mi, están los recuerdos,
la simple alegría de vivir libre
Detrás de mi,
quedo un mundo
que ya no me pertenece
me miro los pies.
Están atados.
Me miro las manos,
están atadas,
me miro el cuerpo,
esta guardado entre paredes,
me miro el alma,
Esta presa
Me miro simplemente
me miro
y a veces no me reconozco …
Entonces vuelvo a mirarme,
los pies, y están atados;
las manos,
y están atadas;
el cuerpo,
y esta preso;
pero el alma,
ay, el alma,
no puede quedarse así,
la dejo ir, correr,
buscar lo que aun queda de mi misma
hacer un mundo con retazos,
y entonces río,
porque aun puedo sentirme viva”

There isn’t any room for apathy, and thus we are still trying our best in the ways we know how despite it all. And we still hold on to our gentle dreams in a not so gentle world…

about

a world wondered full Thailand

"All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die."
