PAST PEOPLE:

This phrase has many possible translations or interpretations: People who have died and now are no longer in the present physically. People who were born within a time that they never belonged to. People who through various circumstances have found themselves being left behind in the world. People we love. Or loved. People who have been abandoned by the present, or have abandoned it themselves… Or simply erased. There are so many meanings to two simple words being placed beside each other, just as there are so many meanings and consequences in placing people within the movement of time.

We usually don’t think we will become ‘past people’ until it has already happened. We see others become past people. But we distance the thought until it slowly crawls into each of our frames focus.

As we worked through this album, all of us looked and reflected on this sentiment. Looking outward to see every year various groups and governments trying to erase more people, with their memories and ideas, from each of our countries with passing waves. Each day filled with screens and stained paper showing the many individuals that have been snatched in the night. You have always realized and known the danger of being stolen from the present and placed in the past in so many facets of your daily life.

That slow and deep grinding below the pavement that runs through your veins as you walk the streets struggling to breathe through the smog or lay in bed at night feeling sick knowing that they have not only stolen the present, but also stolen futures in one leveling of a timeline. A long and fractured history, people just trying to survive day to day, those who do not believe in kings or military violence now trapped as past people beneath the earth. Every day knowing deep in your dry and rasping throat, that reckoning that you do not belong in the present or have a future if nothing changes.

This album is about this. About wanting to see things change. About people like Porlajee "Billy" Rakchongcharoen or the countless others surrounding our lives that we still remember despite the government wanting to erase them. And all the other things in our grating lives that we want to see change that breaks our hearts daily. We are still loving. We are still remembering. We are still trying. We are still hoping, even if we ourselves might very well be past people…
